What happens when I’m gone?
By Mindy Ragan Wood/Editor CommentaryWhat will happen to my child when I die? It’s a question that is much more painful and terrifying to the parents of an adult with developmental disabilities.
If you’re like me, you think more carefully about how you live — from what you eat to how much you exercise — because you live for someone else’s wellbeing in a way no other person ever will. The next question I ask is, how am I doing to provide for my son after I’m gone. If you’re reading this, it’s on your mind too.
The good news is, this troubling question has an answer…or at least options to determine what will happen to your adult child after you are gone.
The Arc of Oklahoma, an organization which champions the rights of people with intellectual disabilities, is offering a training for estate planning.
If you missed it, like I did, you can watch the free training on their website as soon as it’s posted under the resources tab.
Subjects they’ve covered include special needs trusts, STABLE accounts, guardianship, and financial planning.
You can read more about the latest developments at the state Capitol for STABLE accounts and a new bill to offer more options apart from guardianship here.
Stay tuned at Oklahoma Divergent to be alerted when the trainings go live by subscribing to our newsletter.
